Ye Olde Covers - Final Work Process Part: Moby Dick

Before starting the final process, I have researched basic dimension and DPI sizes required for standard posters or covers:

----------

Trade Paperback covers

(1:1.5 proportion, 1800 x 2700 [6" x 9" as pixels] or 1600 x 2560 px)

UK standard film poster

(One sheet, 27" x 40") Procreate cannot handle this size, so scale down (Scaled down to 16.2” x 24”, same proportions)

Animation poster

N/A, use any template from A4 to A1 (used A4)

Game cover:

N/A, use standard DVD size case (5.1"x7.2" one side without spine)

RGB format, 300 DPI

----------

Then, I started working on the covers. As the process had taken several steps and a several hours, I have recorded a time lapse of the process using the Video function in iPad Procreate. I have used the Script brush tool and Monoline brush tool in the basic Procreate Script tool, with noise brush and Gaussian blur function on top for collage styles, set and the fill colour function of Procreate.

As the Script brush tool (size 5%) has different line weights when drawing, meaning that it is thinner at the beginning and the end, I avoided them while making my Collage works. I needed a clean, even line weight for collages, to which the Monoline brush (size 5%) was optimal. Monoline has rounded edges with even line weight, and this brush is often used for paper cut style works in Procreate.

For other styles of works, I mainly used the Script brush since some difference in line weight can make the otherwise simple illustration some variety.

The noise brushes (size 8%) and Gaussian blur functions (at 10%) have been used to create and smooth out shadows. These two brushes were mainly used for collage works as I wanted to create some depth that would come from real life paper cut or collage works.

After the illustrations are finished, texts will be placed using Photoshop’s text tool, font and size to be decided with further posting. This process will apply to the series of illustrations for Animal Farm as well.

  1. You have added these videos with process but you still need to state technically which tools you used in procreate (basically how you did this)
