2D Work (1/3): Physical Process

  After I have finished practising with the materials, I began to create my final 2D pieces. I first did some basic sketches to experiment with the composition of the scene. I have selected the scenes shown below as they are the core events of the story that needs to be seen to understand the morale or the overview. The first scene is of how the king is sick and how he needs the medicine (hare’s liver) to be cured, meaning that it is on the turtle (the ‘only’ creature of the sea to walk on land) to catch the rabbit. The second scene is of how the turtle lies to the rabbit, of riches and status, to lure the rabbit into the sea. The third scene is of how the king captures the rabbit, but how the rabbit lies to the king about hiding its liver on land to escape. The last scene is where the rabbit runs away.




 I have sketched out the final scene after planning the composition. I lightly sketched out the scene lightly with a pencil on khadi paper.



 Then I have outlined the sketch with a black Sharpie marker. This was to give the image more defined shape, and to make the characters more obvious and cartoonish in contrast the the lighter or translucent material of watercolour and gouache.



 Then I have set the background using watercolour as I have done in my colour practice.



 On the second layer was the watered-down gouache.



 And on the third layer was the thick gouache.



 I finished the scene by adding extra patterns and details using Prisma colour pencils. This is the process of one scene because all other illustrations have followed the same methods, the finished work to be uploaded in a separate post.
