Ye Olde Covers - Final Work Process Part: Text Formatting

Texts for Titles and Author names have been placed using Photoshop text tool. The font has been closed as DIN Condensed for Animal Farm and American Typewriter for Moby Dick, with varying font sizes to fit the image. The first edit will be shown as screenshots to show general flow of work, then the rest will be screen recorded.

The text were then rasterised so that they can be transformed into different angles. However, free transform was not present for iPad Photoshop and did not look good when done, so I wrote some texts down using PSD brush at different sizes (details in video).

Imported image (PNG) into Photoshop. Inserted text using text tool from Photoshop, font DIN Condensed, manipulating size between Animal and Farm for design.

Changed font sizes to 140 pt and 200 pt

Rasterised text layer, then transformed shape.

Text for Author name, DIN Condensed at size 60 pt.

Fixed location of text.

    There is some technical commentary here but a little more considering the amount of images might be useful. If it is the same process for each image you just need to say this and you do not have to post every image

  Another main character present in this story is the turtle (sea turtle in technicality due to the setting being in an ocean, but most characterisations do follow more of a land turtle’s), who function as the communicator between the sea king and the rabbit due to it being the only animal to ‘travel through both the water and the land.  I wanted to put more focus on the sea turtle elements to my character, so I have simplified the shape of a sea turtle into two shapes: the teardrop shape which comprises the head and the limbs, and the ‘muffin’ shape which composed the body or the shell.  Photo of a sea turtle by NFWF   Then, as I have with the rabbit character, I analysed turtle characters from famous media. Artist Research: Penny Siopis, ‘Warm Water Imaginaries’ and Abstraction

   Penny Siopis is an multi-medium artist of Greek descent born and working in South Africa, representing issues ranging from the traumas of children in South Africa to global, political issues. She has worked with a range of mediums, from photography and films to paintings, but I am focusing on her painting series and her techniques, specifically her abstraction and fluid art.   For a long time, Siopis worked with concepts that were ‘beyond representation’ (South African History Organisation, n.d.)– personal representation, psychology, trauma and such– and integrating dynamic materials into her works as if to show the organic nature of such psychological issues. This may be especially due to her life in South Africa which had and still has several social issues, one of which being ‘Apartheid’ which is a type of racial segregation that happened in South Africa to South West Africa during 1948 to 1994 due to the all-white government. 2D Work (1/3): Physical Process

  After I have finished practising with the materials, I began to create my final 2D pieces. I first did some basic sketches to experiment with the composition of the scene. I have selected the scenes shown below as they are the core events of the story that needs to be seen to understand the morale or the overview. The first scene is of how the king is sick and how he needs the medicine (hare’s liver) to be cured, meaning that it is on the turtle (the ‘only’ creature of the sea to walk on land) to catch the rabbit. The second scene is of how the turtle lies to the rabbit, of riches and status, to lure the rabbit into the sea. The third scene is of how the king captures the rabbit, but how the rabbit lies to the king about hiding its liver on land to escape. The last scene is where the rabbit runs away.   I have sketched out the final scene after planning the composition.
