What Do I Know About Graphic Design
1. What should I be doing in my subject area?
Graphic design is a subject area commonly involving a 2D design of or for a product such as posters, logos and covers. By going into this subject, I am required to analyse and breakdown different elements of the theme given (ex. Nature, city), combining different objects as necessary, and to compose an attractive image which sends a message to the viewer while drawing them into the product. It also involves knowing different art techniques to best suit the theme that is required, making it quite versatile in different areas.
2. What skills and knowledge do I need for my subject area?
While some ‘physical’ skills are still required for this subject such as painting skills, the general trend for graphic design is that it is becoming digitalised like many other art subjects. Knowing how to do traditional is important especially since it serves as a foundation for many other art skills, but it has become increasingly important to work with digital medium and programs including Photoshop and Illustrator to suit to the industry standards. These digital skills however can be applied to traditional skills, therefore graphic design needs a hybrid skill of these to be an effective graphic designer. Communication is also essential in this subject area, especially if i would have to work for someone and have to send a message to everyone else.
3. What jobs can I get by studying in this subject area?
I believe graphic designers are often hired for cover arts for albums, magazines or books, and in advertisement posters for an event although it seems to be falling out of trend in place of video and digital advertisements (again, emphasising why digital skills are becoming increasingly important). Graphic design is a very general art subject, so I think any businesses requiring a design would be willing to hire a graphic designer. This includes logo designs, branding jobs and more.
4. If I scored myself out of ten, with ten being the highest, how well do I think i know my own subject area?
Out of ten, I will score myself a five or a six regarding on my knowledge of Graphic Design as I believe that I only know the general definition of it like any other people. I have never delved into the subject professionally, and I believe that I have to work in the area professionally for years to even create a definition which will suit it.
Very good Jenny, I think you understood the task really well and demonstrate that you understand that your subject area and industry is developing to reflect the changing landscape in terms of learning digital skills.
