Further Practice

Following up with the ‘Colour and Paper Test’ post, I have done further colour practice with watercolour and gouache on khadi papers.

Unlike watercolour, gouache can lift off of the paper even after drying, so it was not best for filling in the base colours. However as it also has the property to be opaque like acrylics, it set a good contrast between the light background as saturated layers. As such I have used gouache on the ‘second’ and ‘third’ layers of the work, the first additional layer being watered down gouache and another layer of ‘dry’ gouache. The first layer of gouache was to lessen the difference between the watercolour base, this was to lessen the contrast with the dry gouache layer, and the second layer to bring focus to the subject. I found this method to be the most effective in my practice, and will be using this technique for my final project.
