2D Work (3/3): Mockups

As mentioned in the previous post, some illustrations will be used in mockups. This will be done in two concepts, one as it were to be printed on a physical book and the other if it were to be published as ebooks on platform such as Audible. I began with creating a mockup of the book by taking photo of children's book which I have found in the Kimberlin library. I have chosen the book 'Sylvia and Bird' by Catherine Rayner as it had the appropriate size with simple images to be used for mockups.

I have taken photos of the pages and chose what I would be using for the final mockup.

I loaded up the image into Photoshop and darkened the background to bring more focus onto the book. The details of the work will be listed below.

Darken background using Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layer in Photoshop, book deselected using Auto-select tool.

Auto-select the needed page, fill in (Paint Bucket tool) with a background colour on a new layer, create natural shading using Paint Brush tool and Gaussian Blur filter.

Insert image in new layer as clipping mask, warp it according to page using Transform-Distort and Free Transform tools.

Change the clipping layer option to Darken.

Copy the empty page design and transform to fit to the left page.

Insert script on to the page. I have chosen the DIN Alternate font (size 80) as it had clear, blocky look which would be legible for many people including children.

Convert Text layer into Raster layer, then warp text like the illustration to the page.

I have taken the script (and modified it slightly to make it shorter) from the website Readmio as they had an already translated, edited and published script of the story by Dominique Sakmar.

Then I have created a eBook mockup of my illustration. I have taken inspiration from the format used by Book Trust organisation.

Format in Book Trust

I created the mockup with Photoshop, the script taken from the same source mentioned above. The process is as listed below.

Open a new file, the canvas size to fit a screen of iPad Pro 12.9 in (wider screen for reading compared to phone sizes).

Colour the background in a darker shade, draw in a rectangle of a lighter colour to act as the 'page'.

Insert illustration, changed the colour of the rectangle to the same colour of the scanned paper.

Draw circles to be used for icons.

Draw the icon images using the Brush tool.

Insert script.

Changed the font of the text to Chalkduster to give it more 'handmade' feeling. Changed the icon image to give it the same feeling as well.

Colour parts of the text differently as if it is being darkened as it is being read.

 Below are the finished mockups.
